"The Drawing Center of New York will premiere the exhibition Pierced Hearts and True Love: A Century of Drawings for Tattoos, September 16-November 11, 1995. Curated by The Drawing Center in conjunction with renowned tattooist Don Ed Hardy, the exhibition marks the first comprehensive presentation of tattooing and will trace its evolution from historical "flash" of the early twentieth century to the work of contemporary tattoo artists today.
The exhibition features the work of over 60 tattooists. Artists include Sailor Jerry Collins (1911-1973), an important Honolulu tattooer who fused Asian forms with the Western seafaring tradition and ushered in the modern era of tattoos in the late 1930s; several Japanese tattoo masters [such as Horiyoshi II (1916-1991) and Horiyoshi III (1947- )], whose work with traditional hand tools embodies an unbroken 200-year lineage; European and American practitioners of "folk art" tattooing, who share a common vocabulary of images (Joe Lieber, Rosie Camanga, Bert Grimm, "Stoney" St. Clair, Dainty Dotty, C.B. Davis, Gus Wagner, and Charlie Malta); and finally, a cross-section of the most innovative artists working in the field today who have inspired the current "tattoo renaissance" including Japanese, European, and American tattooists (Horijin, Alex Binnie, Mike Malone, Hanky Panky, Filip Leu, Jill Jordan, and Bob Roberts).
Following its presentation at The Drawing Center (September 16-November 11, 1995), Pierced Hearts and True Love: A Century of Drawings for Tattoos will travel to Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, Massachusetts (December 2, 1995 to March 17, 1996); the Joan Lehman Center of Contemporary Art, Miami (April 18-May 26, 1996); and to the Center for the Arts, Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco (June 20-August 18, 1996)."
